UCLA/Caltech Admissions As indicated in the Application Procedures and Interviews sections, a small number of applicants invited for a UCLA interview will be given the option of visiting Caltech the day after their UCLA visit. These candidates will be selected from the group that indicated on their Supplemental Application that they are interested in performing their PhD research at “Caltech only” or at either “UCLA or Caltech.” Applicants are selected for Caltech interviews based primarily on the extent to which their research interests would benefit from the unique strengths of Caltech and the unique interests of Caltech faculty. Applicants who expressed an interest in performing their PhD research at “UCLA or Caltech” will be given full consideration for admission to the UCLA component of the MSTP if they cannot be considered for a Caltech interview. Only a limited number of Caltech interview slots are available each year. From the pool of applicants who interview at Caltech, 2 students per year will be offered admission to the Caltech component of the MSTP. These students are not required to perform their PhD research at Caltech, but have the option of performing their PhD research at either Caltech or UCLA.
Applicants selected to visit Caltech will be transported to the Caltech campus in Pasadena the morning after their UCLA interview. Casual or business casual dress is recommended for the Caltech visit. At Caltech, applicants will meet with two or more faculty in their area of interest, have lunch with current UCLA-Caltech MSTP students, and will tour the Caltech campus before returning to UCLA in the afternoon. Candidates have an option of providing their own transportation to and from Caltech, but must inform the MSTP office to avoid confusion. | ||||||||||
