Joel Braslow, MD, PhD

Joel received his Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his M.D. degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Following his residency training in Psychiatry, he joined the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at UCLA, where he earned a Ph.D. in History. He became a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and the Department of History at UCLA in 1996. He is currently Professor in both Departments, and holds the Francis O’Malley Endowed Chair in the History of Neuroscience. Joel’s research examines the social, cultural, historical, and scientific context of treatment practices for severe mental illness, ranging from early twentieth-century American psychiatric practices to contemporary issues around mental health policy.
