Lauren Uchiyama receives 2022 CAP Distinguished Medical Student Award

Congratulations to Lauren Uchiyama, of the UCLA-Caltech Medical Scientist Training Program, on receiving 2022 CAP Distinguished Medical Student Award! The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has established the Distinguished Medical Student Award as part of a new initiative to increase awareness of pathology as a clinical specialty. This new CAP award is intended to raise the profile of pathology as a valued medical specialty and to recognize excellence and/or interest in pathology in a deserving medical student.

Lauren is a currently in her second year of the PhD in the MBI-Gene Regulation Graduate Group, studying lipid metabolism and organelle biology in liver physiology. Her PhD advisor is Dr. Peter Tontonoz, who is also a physician-scientist in Pathology by training. During medical school, Lauren was co-coordinator for the Pathology Interest Group and held events exposing students to the field of Pathology, including a Pathology Research Panel and shadowing opportunities.
